SLOVENIA 2019. Day 7: Higher and higher ....

Image
It was our last full day today so we got out early. The weather was a bit dull and rain was forecast but we did have our rain gear so we didn’t let that bother us. We decided to walk up towards the Vrsic pass, we got to an altitude of 1200 metres before the weather turned. It was a hard slog at times but the views were amazing.  After eating our lunch we decided to head back down before the weather got too bad. Luckily we made it down before the heavy downpour . We had booked an evening meal in our hotel as it had fantastic reviews. It truly was out of this world my photos do it no justice. My only regret was we had left it till the last night to try ☹️ The attention to detail was exquisite. The food would not have been out of place in any fine dining restaurant around the world. It really was a beautiful end to our holiday.

Slovenia 2019. Day 6: Meadows and mountains ......

Image
Today was a lazy start with breakfast on the balcony. I don’t think we would ever get bored of the view. The pension although very basic has lots of info about the local area and some good maps.We decided where to go over breakfast. We wanted a nice flat walk today so decided to walk to the next village  Podkoren. While walking to Podkoren we walked through beautiful meadows with the mountains in the background. The buildings we saw on the way were so cute and they always had pretty flowers on the veranda.  We arrived in the centre of Podkoren ready to eat our packed lunch but the local inn just looked too inviting. We returned to Lake Jasna and spent the rest of the afternoon reading and resting our weary legs. Tim had a  dip but the water was very cold.

Slovenia 2019. Day 5: An Anniversary to remember ......

Image
Today we needed to rest our weary legs, and as it was our 26th wedding anniversary a day out was called for. We decided to head to the town of Bled. It has a big lake with an  island on it. It is a very famous view and one of the only things we knew Slovenia was known for. It was only 45 minutes away from Kranjska Gora and only one bus change. We arrived nice and early and it was a beautiful day. We walked around part of the lake then treated ourselves with a trip around the lake by horse and carriage. The lake was large with lots of things happening, people swimming sunbathing and cycling. It really was an enchanting way to see the lake. After the relaxing morning we went up to visit the medieval castle that was perched on a high rock overlooking Lake Bled. It’s the oldest castle in Slovenia so is quite a tourist attraction. We had a very special meal in the upper courtyard over looking the lake. It was a delicious meal and the local Slovenian cheeses were very t...

Slovenia 2019. Day 4: Up, up and away .....

Image
We had a slow start today and had breakfast at our pension while looking over at Lake Jasna. Lake Jasna looked so inviting this morning we had a slow stroll around it. We then went to Kranjska Gora and took the ski lift up to a mountain hut. I found this quite terrifying and that was without skis on.😂 We had a relaxing drink while looking back down at the town. It was so peaceful and it felt a lot warmer so we stayed a while just taking it all in. Our plan was to see the view then return to the town, but we decided to walk further up the mountain towards Ciprnik. The trail was just bulldozed out of the side of the mountain  with very steep inclines. It was tough going. We made it to a small hut which was a typical alpine hut. The place was so cute selling basic food and drinks. We enjoyed some mountain tea as we rested here a while just soaking in the majestic peaks of Spik, Skrlatico, Razor, Prisank, Mojstrovko and Jalovca. ...

Slovenia 2019. Day 3: Strudel and Schnapps .......

Image
An early morning was required today because we were going to the Julian Alps. The views just got better the higher we snaked up the mountain pass. We stopped at a mountain hut for a strudel with a view and a blueberry schnapps. The views were stunning everywhere you looked . We came across a little chapel all made out of wood, it was so pretty. It was on the Russian road on the northern side of the Vrsic Pass. It was built by the Russian prisoners of war in remembrance of the Russians that died building the road.  The Vrsic pass has an elevation of 1600 m which gave us stunning panoramic views of the high peaks. We carried on up the 50 hairpin bends then back down to the Soca Valley. We saw some amazing sights. The Soca River was beautiful with its crystal clear waters glistening against the limestone rocks. We made our way to another small town. This town was rebuilt after the 1989 earthquake. We also saw a few ghost towns...

Slovenia 2019. Day 2: A room with a view .....

Image
We woke early today, excited to investigate our new surroundings. We are staying in a pension which only has 6 rooms and amazing views. The mountains are breathtaking .                            We walked into Kranjska Gora which is about a 15 minute walk. It is a very pretty town with lots of  cute houses and cafes. We decided we needed to get exploring this beautiful place and found a waterfall on the map and off we went.We caught the local bus to a small village called Mojstrana. It was a quaint little village  which was very quiet. We got some bread, cheese and fruit for lunch and sat in the little square  before starting our walk. The walk was a riverside trail that was very enjoyable and at times very steep.  We arrived at the Pericnik waterfall. The hardest part of the walk was for the photo opportunity which  was standing behind the gushing water at...
