Lake Garda 2022. Day 3: Malcesine

Today after another large hotel breakfast we made our way to a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. We caught the ferry from Riva to Malcesine, this gave us amazing views of Riva from the lake.

As the ferry approaches Malcesine you get a wonderful view of the Castello Scaligero which gets its name from the Della Scala family who owned it in the 13th century.

After a quick drink in the Plaza Turazza we made our way to the cable cars to get to the top of Mount Baldo. The cable cars carry 70 people and rotates as it goes up the mountain side, so everyone gets to see the views. Even though it went from 1000 m to 1760 m the temperature at the top was still intense. We still managed a walk along the top to see some fantastic views.

After we had spent a few hours here we made our way down to the town for some lunch. We came across a small eatery that had an outdoor area with shade from a grape vine. It was such a cute place and felt very Italian.

We enjoyed our meal of house salad and a meat platter washed down with a beer.
The winding cobbled streets were a joy to amble around but it was extremely hot. It was a very quint little town, and we stopped at the different Plazas just to cool down and people watch for a while and to experience the Italian Aperitif.

After  a nice little rest and snack we went to the Castle and museum.

The castle has pasted through numerous hands and has changed over the centuries so lots of remodelling has taken shape. The bell tower is still original and the tower gives good views over the crowded roof tops of Malcesine. The museum houses some interesting displays on the lakes flora and fauna. The hot afternoon had begun to take its toll on us so we caught the ferry back to Riva and had a lovely meal in a pavement cafe.
